The Family Courts have long been shrouded in secrecy allegedly to protect children. However, all the evidence points to it actually protecting abusers. In this expose, Laura interviews award winning Barrister and campaigner Dr Charlotte Proudman who takes us behind the closed doors of the Family Courtrooms.
It is estimated that 30,000 cases each year involve allegations of domestic abuse. Many survivors report feeling retraumatised and disbelieved by the very process meant to protect.
In this explosive episode, you will hear case after case where survivors of sexual, physical and emotional violence are called liars because they lack evidence for their claims, and deemed unreliable witnesses compared to the men who abused them. They are forced to recall the worst moments of their lives in excruciating detail, sometimes face-to-face with their violent ex, and always confronted with a lawyer who will do anything to destroy their story.
You will learn about Kate Kniveton, a former Member of Parliament, who was raped and abused for 10 years and then her abusive ex continued to use the legal system to abuse her. She was initially advised that the family court would “take a dim view” if she tried to prevent him seeing their child. Dr Proudman took over the case and the family court went on to make 14 findings against former Conservative minister Andrew Griffiths including attempted strangulation and rape. This resulted landmark ruling in the case.
Dr Proudman also share how the old boys network tried to take her down - but she won and has turned the tables on them.
